Compass Cup - About us information

How it began

The Compass Cup is one of those wacky Australian events that shows our warped sense of humour.

Back in 1973, the local Rural Youth were looking at ways of making money for the local community, and having fun at the same time. Someone came up with the idea that hopping aboard an untrained cow and riding it would be fun. The thousands of people that have watched the Compass Cup since would definitely agree.

In the early days there was no fenced off arena, it was the crowd that kept the cows "on-track" so to speak. After many escapes down the main Adelaide to Victor Harbor road and into the streets of Mount Compass, it was recommended that a fenced arena be erected to keep the cows in.

Why come to the Compass Cup?

  • A cheap family day of fun. Gold coin donation entry for kids under 14
  • We cater for the young, and no so young
    • Younger crowd - side shows, monster cars, farm animal zoo, tractor pull
    • No so young - bar facilities, art craft and bric&brac stalls, after race concert running for over 6 hours with a very relaxed atmosphere
  • Spectator participation in the events held
  • Purchase a cow to ride in the heats of the Compass Cup, and if all goes well, win the final!
